Get the look: Travertine-inspired tiles

With the travertine trend staying strong in 2024, this natural stone is an attractive option to many homeowners, due to its natural colour palette, robustness and overall style. However, as a more expensive option, travertine doesn’t suit everyone’s budget – and there are a few drawbacks with using travertine tiles, such as the fact that they require regular sealing.

If you like the look but don’t want the cost and maintenance involved with real travertine, then we’re here to give you some inspiration for tiles which will give the same vibe – but with added benefits. So, read to the end of the blog to find out more …

The Penta Cream Matt square Non-slip Mosaic Sheet has the look of travertine.

What is travertine?

Travertine is a type of limestone, so is a natural stone which is very versatile and used in construction and for tiles, both indoors and outside. With marble-like veining detail and a variety of earthy tones – including cream, beige, orange and even red – it has many aesthetic advantages which deliver an elegant, refined appearance and a timeless style.

However, as a more expensive material, travertine is also very porous, so isn’t ideal for using in bathrooms, while it also needs to be sealed, especially in humid environments. It’s further susceptible to scratches and stains, where tiles are much more resistant to this, so there are some drawbacks which need to be considered before using it in your home.

Bearing all this in mind, investing in hard-wearing, non-porous tiles, such as porcelain, is much more cost-effective and practical, so if you like the travertine look, then there are other ways to achieve it.

Tiles that fit the travertine trend

The Victoria Marfil Matt Porcelain Tile is a large-format rectangular tile with a natural colour palette which has the look of travertine stone but is made from hard-wearing porcelain. Ideal for bathrooms, the matt finish and natural stone-effect look, combined with those light-grey hues and textured appearance mean this is a good option to consider if you want something similar to travertine.

With a slightly richer colour palette, meanwhile, the Caracalla Beige Porcelain Tile mixes cream and beige tones and has an added warmth to it. Again, the porcelain makes this tile ideal for bathroom use while the rectified edges allow the tiles to be laid more closely together, resulting in a more flowing, seamless look.

The matt finish adds to the authentic stone aesthetic while giving these tiles a contemporary style and they have further versatility in being suitable for both walls and floors. The large-format size also gives them that travertine aesthetic and the overall effect is one of timeless luxury, but with the benefits and more cost-effective pricing of tiles.

Another inspired choice for a travertine-inspired aesthetic is the Dome Nut Rectified Tile, a large Spanish wall tile with that all-important marble veining detail which gives it the travertine look. Similar to real stone but made from non-porous porcelain, it’s once again perfect for bathroom use and is both scratch and stain-resistant, while the rectified edges ensure a seamless aesthetic with minimal grout lines when laid.

The Danbury Relieve Natural Matt Rectified Porcelain Tile is another option if you like the travertine aesthetic. This large rectangular floor tile has rectified edges for a seamless look, with each tile featuring differently shaped squares. This adds depth and visual interest while the colour palette embodies the natural appearance associated with travertine, enhanced by the modern matt finish.

If you want to add luxury style to your interior, then it's the perfect choice and will easily complement a range of décor.
